November 30 is the deadline for entering the Steel Joist Institute's 2001 Design Awards Program (http://www.steeljoist.org/whatsnew/SJI2001entry.pdf). Awards will be presented in three major categories: Industrial, Non-industrial, and Unique.
Submitted projects must have been constructed within the past three years and they must be located in the U.S., Canada, or Mexico, and the steel joists and joist girders used must have been manufactured by an active SII member. In addition to cash prizes, the winners will be recognized in a special issue of the SJI's Structural Engineer magazine.
Projects will be judged on flexibility, speed of construction, value, and aesthetics. More than one project may be submitted, and there is no charge for entries. Submittals must include the name and location of the structural engineering firm, architectural firm, general contractor, project owner, steel joist manufacturer, steel fabricator, and steel erector. More information may be obtained from SJI, 3127 10th Ave. North Extension, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29577-6760; (843) 626-1995; e-mail: stljoist@sunnews.infi.net.
