GLFEA / MSPE / SEAMi seek nominations
For Annual Steel Systems Awards
April 4, 2002 - April 26 is the deadline to submit nominations for the annual Steel Systems Excellence Awards, presented by the Great Lakes Fabricators & Erectors Association, the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers, and the Structural Engineers Association of Michigan. The awards are given to encourage and reward excellence in design, engineering, fabrication and erection of steel systems in Michigan projects. Winners will be announced at the annual evening dinner May 18, as part of the MSPE's 55th annual conference, May 16-19 at the Boyne Highlands Resort near Harbor Springs.
The steel systems awards will be presented in the categories of large ($5 million+), medium ($500,000 to $5 million), and small ($500,000 or less). To be eligible, projects must have been completed between Jan. 1, 1999, and December 31, 2001; significant portions of the project's framing system must be constructed of structural steel shapes, and the project or the project engineer must be located in Michigan. Both new construction and renovation projects are eligible.
Award-winning teams will be presented with $500 scholarships to be awarded to deserving Lawrence Technological University students in the names of the winning team members. Winning projects will be publicized by GLFEA, MSPE, and/or SEAMi, and plaques will be presented to up to four team members of winning projects. Judging will be by a panel of experts in the structural steel industry, with two each from GLFEA and the SEAMi, and three from MSPE. Judges have been instructed to consider the project's entire structural system with an emphasis on:
Innovation in solving the project requirements;
Advancement of the structural steel construction industry;
Creativity in meeting or exceeding the owner's/client's needs;
Significance of engineering or construction achievement;
Social or economic impact on quality of life.
Last year's winning projects (http://www.glfea.org/html/gn-2001awards.htm) included GLFEA member firm, Douglas Steel Fabricating Corp, Lansing, for the Michigan State University Biomedical and Physical Sciences Facility. The approximately $85 million project also featured the SmithGroup, Detroit, as architect and engineer, and the Christman Co., Lansing, as general contractor. Taking the honors in the "medium" category was the Blue Cross Blue Shield Customer Service Center in downtown Detroit, framed in structural steel by H&G Steel Fabrication Co. of Grand Ledge. Completed in October 1999, the building was designed by architect Neumann/Smith & Associates, Southfield, with Desai/Nasr Consulting Engineers Inc., West Bloomfield, serving as structural engineer. Winning in the "small" category was the Door Delivery Conveyor Trestle at DaimlerChrysler Corporation's Windsor Assembly Plant, winning praise for structural steel fabricator and erector McCrindle Steel Industries Ltd. of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. BEI Associates Inc., Detroit, served as architect and engineer, with Ryco Alberici Inc., Hamilton, as construction manager.
GLFEA requests that entries in this year's competition be presented, in duplicate, in three-ring binders and contain a cover letter naming the project and location, along with the names, addresses and phone numbers of the steel fabricator, architect/engineer/erector, and owner. Submittals must state the total structural steel tonnage used and its cost. Photographs and slides of the project, both during and after construction, must be included and cleared for later use by the sponsoring associations. The narrative, to be no longer than three pages, should include a description of the building program, an explanation of how the structure satisfies the selection criteria, and any distinguishing/unusual aspects of the structural solution.
Nominations should be sent to GLFEA, 1001 Woodard Avenue, Suite 1101, Detroit, MI 48226; telephone, 313/309-2000.
