January 15, 2003 - With sponsorship provided by the Great Lakes Fabricators & Erectors Association, the University of Detroit-Mercy will be hosting a series of lectures by world famous architects during the winter and spring of 2003. Addressing the common theme of "Shifting Ground," the lectures will focus on the architect's awareness of "ground" and its relationship to the practice of architectural design.

Changes in AISC Structural Steel Code
To Be Topic of GLFEA Breakfast Meeting
Detroit, Jan. 6, 2003 - The new 2000 Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges from the American Institute of Steel Construction offers clear-cut document language for every structural steel project, according to Steven Ashton, P.E., senior engineer/continuing education with the Chicago, Ill.-based AISC. Changes made in the March 7, 2000, edition of the Code will be the topic of discussion at the next Great Lakes Fabricators & Erectors Association Breakfast Meeting, Jan. 24, at the Westin Hotel at the Town Center, 1500 Northwestern Highway (Northwestern Service Drive at Evergreen), Southfield.

MIOSHA To Delay Implementing Portions
of New State Steel Erection Rule
Detroit, Sept. 27, 2002 - Sections of the MIOSHA Steel Erection Standard, Part 26, were updated effective Sept. 18, 2002, but the implementation of some of the standard's new provisions won't happen until the New Year. At a Sept. 27 breakfast meeting, the Great Lakes Fabricators and Erectors Association outlined the new rule's key design and fabrication issues.

Wins NEA's Craftsman Award
May 14, 2002 - A Michigan ironworker brought home the prize! Dallas Compeau, Iron Workers Local 25, was honored by NEA - The Association of Union Constructors with its 2002 Craftsman Award for Ingenuity & Innovation in Construction in the association's 13th annual awards competition. In a ceremony April 19th during the NEA's 33rd annual meeting April 16-20 in Sanibel, Fla., Compeau, of Pinconning, received the prestigious honor in the 75,000 to 150,000 work hours category for his turn as project superintendent on a Mackinac Bridge project in 2000-01. For Annual Steel Systems Awards
April 4, 2002 - April 26 is the deadline to submit nominations for the annual Steel Systems Excellence Awards, presented by the Great Lakes Fabricators & Erectors Association, the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers, and the Structural Engineers Association of Michigan. The awards are given to encourage and reward excellence in design, engineering, fabrication and erection of steel systems in Michigan projects. OSHA Issues Compliance Directive
For New Steel Erection Standard
March 22 - The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration today issued a compliance directive (CPL 2-1.34) for enforcing the new steel erection standard. The compliance directive goes into effect today, March 22. The new standard became effective Jan. 18. [More»]

Michigan Enrolled SB 406 Passes, Construction Lien Law Amended
Gov. Engler signed into law on Nov. 7 Public Act No. 151 of 2001 (enrolled Senate Bill 406), effective immediately. The new law amends the 1980 PA497 by amending section 110 of the state construction lien law (MCL 570.1110, amended by 1982 PA 17).[More»]

Detroit, Nov.7 – In the first of the 2001-2002 series of lectures organized by the University of Detroit-Mercy's School of Architecture, San Francisco, Calif., architect Mark Horton showcased his practice of "traditional architecture…without any pretense or judgment" as a means of "affecting peoples' lives, at some level or another." In his view, good architecture provides a positive "interference" with life if it both delivers creativity and inspires the future practice of it.[More»]

Steel Erection Standard Challenged,
OSHA Delays Effective Date to January 2002
As a variety of industry groups voiced concerns, filed appeals, and pondered litigation in response to various provisions in the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration's new "Safety Standards for Steel Erection" (Subpart R of 29 CFR, Part 1926), the agency pushed the effective date back to Jan. 18, 2002, it announced July 13th. The rule was supposed to have gone into effect on July 18th of this year.

Installs Statue of Detroit's founder At Tricentennial Celebration
A highpoint of the re-enactment on July 24th of Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac's landing in 1701 at the shores of what would become Detroit was the unveiling of a 2,000 lb. cast bronze statue of Cadillac. A gift to the city of Detroit from the French-American Chamber of Commerce, the nearly 10-ft. tall statue was installed earlier in the month by GLFEA member firm Barton Malow Rigging Co. It is the creation of artists William T. Keiffer and Ann Feeley. M. Raymond Forni, president of the French National Assembly, presided at the unveiling, which capped a nearly two-hour birthday program at Hart Plaza

National Society of Professional Engineers
To Hold Annual Convention/Expo in Detroit
The Detroit Marriott Renaissance Center downtown will be headquarters July 26-30 for the National Society of Professional Engineers' 2001 Annual Convention and Exposition. Educational sessions, exhibits, networking opportunities, the society's annual awards presentation, and several special events will be featured at the meeting, which this year is centered on the theme: "Engineering a New Workforce: The Changing Face of Engineering."
