AISC Calls for Entries in Two Awards Competitions

The American Institute of Steel Construction has issued a call for entries for two upcoming awards competitions. www.aisc.org/competition.asp?ar=42&co=143.

The Innovative Design and Excellence in Architecture with Steel (I. D.E.A.S.) awards are presented annually by AISC and the American Institute of Architects to recognize designs in which structural steel is a prominent architectural feature. The structural steel used may be either interior or exterior. Regional awards are presented in the eastern, central, and western U.S., and regional winners then compete for national honors. The competition is divided into projects valued at less than $10 million and projects valued at more than $10 million. Deadline for entry in the 2002 I.D.E.A.S. competition is Jan. 15, 2002.

The Engineering Awards of Excellence are national honors presented yearly to recognize engineering excellence and innovation in steel framed buildings. Projects are honored in three categories: those with a value up to $10 million, between $10 million and $25 million, and those valued at more than $25 million. In addition to the national awards, two merit awards may be given in the more than $25 million category. Deadline for entry is March 15, 2002.

The projects are judged on creativity in response to the owner's and architect's program; application of new or innovative technology; structural efficiency; and significance of engineering achievement. Winners will be announced at AISC's North American Steel Construction Conference, April 24-27, 2002, in Seattle, Wash.
