Changes in AISC Structural Steel Code

Detroit, Jan. 6, 2003 - The new 2000 Code of Standard Practice for Steel Buildings and Bridges from the American Institute of Steel Construction offers clear-cut document language for every structural steel project, according to Steven Ashton, P.E., senior engineer/continuing education with the Chicago, Ill.-based AISC. Changes made in the March 7, 2000, edition of the Code will be the topic of discussion at the next Great Lakes Fabricators & Erectors Association Breakfast Meeting, Jan. 24, at the Westin Hotel at the Town Center, 1500 Northwestern Highway (Northwestern Service Drive at Evergreen), Southfield.

Ashton will present a summary of the major changes - which affect engineers, fabricators, erectors, and contractors - made in the 2000 edition of the Code, including:

• New provisions for fast-track project delivery.
• Clarification of language relating to connection design responsibility.
• Inclusion of both U.S. customary units and metric units.
• New provisions for existing structures, including demolition and shoring.
• Simplification, clarification, and revision of the shop and erection drawing approval process.
• Simplification and revision of the provisions regarding temporary support of steel frames during erection.
• Guidance on the nature of information that must be reflected in the design drawings.
